Department News

Reserving 21-105A and 21-105B

The CAED is keeping both 21-105A and 21-105B open for all CAED personnel to reserve at this time. Some important procedures follow to reserve successfully.

1. Check the room calendar you want to reserve to see if the time you need is open.

2. If the time and date are open, you will need to make the actual reservation through your own calendar. Close all other calendars but your own (yours is the one listed at the top).

3. Once on your calendar, find the date and start time of your reservation and double click. A "Quick Ad Appt" window will open.

4. Enter your last name and title (or class #) of the event in the "subject" box.

5. Choose "More details" at bottom left.

6. Place the building number (21-) in the location box and a drop down menu will appear showing you all the rooms with calendars in building 21. Choose the one you want.

7. Choose the end time of your reservation on the right hand side of the screen

8. Choose "Save" at top left.

9. Close your calendar and open the room you have reserved to confirm that all went well.

If you have any problems with the steps, feel free to call Nora at 6-1321.

Furlough Days

The Architecture faculty furlough days schedule can now be viewed at Faculty Furlough (.pdf).

Surplus Office Equipment

There is a limited number of good condition file cabinets, shelf units and storage cabinets available through the Support Shop. They may be seen in the Shop area until taken or October 2. They will then disappear never to be seen again!

Toot Your Own Horn

Please continue submitting items for Toot Your Own Horn to Henri and Kathi. Include dates and complete titles of awards, papers, conferences, etc., relative to the announcement, and send to Henri an electronic copy of any papers published. Please also continue forwarding information on achievements by alumni and students.

Social Events

Alpha Rho Chi CAED Faculty Social

Saturday, October 10, 7:00-10:00pm

Ryan Hoyt, a representative of Alpha Rho Chi would like to invite CAED faculty to a Faculty Social to allow students and professors of the College or Architecture and Environmental Design to interact and get to know one another outside of the classroom.

The social will be held at Tom Di Santo's home at 1627 Nipomo Street in San Luis Obispo on October 10 from 7:00-10:00pm. Enjoy hors d'oeuvres and refreshments.

New Crit Schedule Procedure

In an effort to be more efficient and also to be more sustainable, the Architecture Department has instituted a new process for announcing crit schedules and locations.

You will find a Studio Review Form on the Administration page of Architecture web site. For any review that you would like to have published on the Architecture web site, please fill out and submit a Studio Review Form on line. For those who have already scheduled a crit/review for Crit Week please fill out a Studio Review Form as soon as possible.

Your crit/review will be placed on the Studio Reviews section of the News & Events page as soon after we receive your form as possible.

For Crit Week we will still post an updated schedule next to the faculty mailboxes, but will no longer place schedules in each mailbox. We look forward to your participation in this new process. Please contact Shane McKeague at 6-1316 or smckeagu@calpoly.edu if you have any questions.

d[fab]lab Introduction

An introduction and training session for the d[fab]lab will be on Saturday, October 3, 10:00am-12:00pm in 21-105A (Courtyard Gallery). All students are welcome.

2009-10 Hearst Lecture Series

The first lecture of the 2009-10 Hearst Lecture Series will be by Kevin Klinger on October 9, 2009 in the Business Rotunda, Room 03-213 on the subject of Manufacturing Material Effects and the Institute for Digital Fabrication.

Hosted by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design, the Hearst Lecture Series highlights the work of designers and architects from all over the world. The free public lectures are made possible through a grant from the Hearst Foundation.

Web site Change: IEP Faculty-Led Programs

The page for faculty-led, quarter-long study abroad programs for students has changed. Take a minute to look at the new site and refer students who might be interested in studying with Cal Poly professors. Faculty-Led Programs provides students with a unique opportunity to study abroad.

The International Education and Programs Welcome Faculty web page provides faculty with the opportunity to teach, lead, and mentor students abroad.

Rotch Scholarship

The Rotch Traveling Scholarship was established in Boston in 1883 to promote architectural education through foreign travel.This program also includes foreign travel and has been established to augment the architectural education of students of architecture at the highest level of scholarship within a studio format. Proposals are invited from faculty members in all NAAB accredited schools of architecture in the United States for travel anywhere in the world during the following calendar year. AIA San Francisco Excellence in Unbuilt Design

Co-Sponsored with SFMOMA

Deadline for Entries: February 11, 2010 at 1:00pm

This award category calls for architectural design work that, to date, remains unbuilt. Unbuilt architectural designs of any project type are eligible, including purely theoretical projects and unbuilt client-sponsored projects, such as buildings, interiors, transportation infrastructure, and monuments. The intent of this award category is to welcome the ideas and work of practicing architects, architectural educators, and architecture students from throughout the Bay Area. High Bridge International Design Ideas Competition

Registration launch in September 2009; Submission deadline in January 2010.

The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee announces its 2010 Biennial Ideas competition for students and young professionals. This year they have chosen to focus on the historic High Bridge which currently connects recreational parks in the Bronx and Manhattan. The competition will challenge participants to transform the bridge and surround areas into a vibrant public space that includes an arts complex for emerging artistic communities. Miami+Beach Bienal 2009 International Competition

The Miami+Beach Bienal 2009 and the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects cordially invite professionals to participate in its different categories with built works from the last five years. Among the categories will be one devoted to projects and unbuilt architecture, in addition to an e-competition open to both professionals and students. Project will also be exhibited at the 2010 National Convention of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Nuckolls Fund 2010 Grants

Applications for Nuckolls Fund 2010 Grants are now available.

Deadline: February 5, 2010

In 2010, the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education will award several grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Grant applications are now available and can be found at the Application Forms page of The Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education Inc. web site. Grants will be announced at Lightfair International on May 12, 2010.

EPA Grant Partnership

Jim Fenske, an architect in South Pasadena, is writing an EPA grant and is interesting in partnering with possible Cal Poly faculty for the grant. Please see Jim Fenske's email message and the text of the Emerging Frontiers in Research and Innovation 2010 (EFRI-2010) grant solicitation for more details.

ASCA and CAPT Pilot Program Research Opportunity

To be launched in Fall 2009

ASCA and CAPT are looking for faculty interested in participating in a pilot program to gather research on project teams for the 2009-2010 academic year.
