Senate Committee Vacancies
The College of Architecture and Environmental Design has a few more senate committee vacancies to fill. The committees include: Faculty Affairs Committee, Grants Review Committee, Instruction Committee, Research and Professional Development Committee. Friday, October 9, and Friday, October 23, have been chosen as furlough days for the CAED shop staff and the CAED shop will be closed on those days. Doug will post signs to that effect. Please make sure your students are aware of this as well.

Ralph J. Roesling is founding principal of Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects, with over 30 years of experience in all phases of architecture and planning. He has served as Principal-in-Charge, Project Architect and Principal Designer for various project types from office and retail uses, to educational, civic buildings and residential. Mr. Roesling has directed many major architectural and planning projects for private, governmental and institutional clients throughout California and abroad. He has extensive experience in assessment and evaluation of existing structures for reuse and redevelopment projects. His architectural projects have won several Honor Awards from the American Institute of Architects and an Orchid Award. He has lectured locally as well as abroad in Japan and Italy. The NCARB Prize supports combined practice and education projects at the university level. Submissions must represent unique efforts to integrate education and practice initiatives while allowing students to earn academic credit.
Six cash awards, totaling more than $60,000, will be presented:
Five awards of $7,500
One grand prize award of $25,000
Architecture schools with programs that are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and architecture schools with programs that are candidates for NAAB-accreditation are invited to submit projects. Projects must also involve a non-faculty architect, offer the project as part of the architecture curriculum for academic credit, and have commenced no earlier than the fall 2007 academic term. Submissions must be received by NCARB no earlier than Tuesday, January 5, 2010, and no later than Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 5:00 p.m. EST. Architects, designers, landscape architects, planners and students are invited to prepare concept plans for the redevelopment of three strategic sites in the Pioneer Valley, a region of Western Massachusetts defined by the Connecticut River Valley. These sites are located in Southampton, Palmer and Hadley. The goal for this international design competition is to create a local example of sustainable development and redevelopment, and to provide a model of how communities in the region can grow smarter. With the partnerships formed through this competition process, there will be significant momentum for turning the winning concept plan idea into reality. The Rotch Traveling Scholarship was established in Boston in 1883 to promote architectural education through foreign travel.This program also includes foreign travel and has been established to augment the architectural education of students of architecture at the highest level of scholarship within a studio format. Proposals are invited from faculty members in all NAAB accredited schools of architecture in the United States for travel anywhere in the world during the following calendar year. This award category calls for architectural design work that, to date, remains unbuilt. Unbuilt architectural designs of any project type are eligible, including purely theoretical projects and unbuilt client-sponsored projects, such as buildings, interiors, transportation infrastructure, and monuments. The intent of this award category is to welcome the ideas and work of practicing architects, architectural educators, and architecture students from throughout the Bay Area. The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee announces its 2010 Biennial Ideas competition for students and young professionals. This year they have chosen to focus on the historic High Bridge which currently connects recreational parks in the Bronx and Manhattan. The competition will challenge participants to transform the bridge and surround areas into a vibrant public space that includes an arts complex for emerging artistic communities. Gensler is seeking nominations for two outstanding African-American students in a NAAB accredited architecture program to be awarded academic scholarships and a paid summer internship in a Gensler regional office. To be considered, both candidates must be 5th year African-American students in the Fall of 2010 (i.e. current 4th year), and applicants must include a formal letter of nomination from Cal Poly in their submission materials. The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) announces the 2009 Beyond Green High Performance Building Awards. This unique program recognizes the initiatives that shape, inform and catalyze the high-performance building market, as well as the real-world application of high-performance design and construction practices. Award winners will be invited to present their projects on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. in February of 2010, in conjunction with an educational briefing for the High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus. The Miami+Beach Bienal 2009 and the Miami Chapter of the American Institute of Architects cordially invite professionals to participate in its different categories with built works from the last five years. Among the categories will be one devoted to projects and unbuilt architecture, in addition to an e-competition open to both professionals and students. Project will also be exhibited at the 2010 National Convention of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). In 2010, the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education will award several grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.
