It was announced yesterday that the Architecture program at Cal Poly has maintained its ranking by DesignIntelligence as the third best undergraduate program in the nation . The top two schools were Cornell University and Syracuse University, making Cal Poly the number one ranked public University. Thank you all for your contributions to make the Cal Poly Architecture department such a high ranking program.
As of Thursday, October 29, the Architecture Department has a Facebook page. It is listed under Architecture at Cal Poly. You are invited to become a friend and encourage your students to do so as well. It will be a great tool for announcements, information, last minute notifications and connecting with other Architecture students, faculty, and alumni. We look forward to seeing you on Facebook.

Due to fiscal issues, the schedule for June 2010 commencement has changed. All ceremonies are now going to take place on Saturday, June 12, 2010. The schedule for the day is listed below. Please help communicate this change to all students and staff who may have seen the old two-day schedule. We want them to realize there has been a change.

Preston Scott Cohen

Preston Scott Cohen’s work is known for its synthesis of architectural typologies, descriptive geometry, and digital media. The work of his firm, Preston Scott Cohen, Inc., encompasses projects ranging in scale from residences to educational and cultural institutions. Cohen received the first prize in the international competitions for the Robbins Elementary School in Trenton, NJ (2006), and for two Museums: the Taiyuan Art Museum in Taiyuan, China (2007-2011) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Amir Building (2003-2009). He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and three Progressive Architecture Awards. His work has been widely published and is in numerous collections. Cohen is the author of Contested Symmetries and Other Predicaments in Architecture. Cohen is the Chair of Department of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design where he is the coordinator of the first year design studios and teaches the foundation course in Projective and topological geometry, advanced studios and design thesis.

The NCARB Prize supports combined practice and education projects at the university level. Submissions must represent unique efforts to integrate education and practice initiatives while allowing students to earn academic credit.
Six cash awards, totaling more than $60,000, will be presented:
Five awards of $7,500
One grand prize award of $25,000
Architecture schools with programs that are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) and architecture schools with programs that are candidates for NAAB-accreditation are invited to submit projects. Projects must also involve a non-faculty architect, offer the project as part of the architecture curriculum for academic credit, and have commenced no earlier than the fall 2007 academic term. Submissions must be received by NCARB no earlier than Tuesday, January 5, 2010, and no later than Tuesday, February 2, 2010, 5:00 p.m. EST. Architects, designers, landscape architects, planners and students are invited to prepare concept plans for the redevelopment of three strategic sites in the Pioneer Valley, a region of Western Massachusetts defined by the Connecticut River Valley. These sites are located in Southampton, Palmer and Hadley. The goal for this international design competition is to create a local example of sustainable development and redevelopment, and to provide a model of how communities in the region can grow smarter. With the partnerships formed through this competition process, there will be significant momentum for turning the winning concept plan idea into reality. This award category calls for architectural design work that, to date, remains unbuilt. Unbuilt architectural designs of any project type are eligible, including purely theoretical projects and unbuilt client-sponsored projects, such as buildings, interiors, transportation infrastructure, and monuments. The intent of this award category is to welcome the ideas and work of practicing architects, architectural educators, and architecture students from throughout the Bay Area. The New York Chapter of the American Institute of Architects' Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee announces its 2010 Biennial Ideas competition for students and young professionals. This year they have chosen to focus on the historic High Bridge which currently connects recreational parks in the Bronx and Manhattan. The competition will challenge participants to transform the bridge and surround areas into a vibrant public space that includes an arts complex for emerging artistic communities. The University of Arizona, College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture announces the opening for the position of Director of the School of Architecture. The School of Architecture is ranked 6th in the West, the School of Landscape Architecture is ranked 1st in the West, and the Drachman Institute was recently reviewed as one of the top community outreach centers in the country. The faculty, students, and alumni of the School of Architecture are garnering top awards in scholarship, international design competitions, and even the AIA firm of the year. The Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC) announces the 2009 Beyond Green High Performance Building Awards. This unique program recognizes the initiatives that shape, inform and catalyze the high-performance building market, as well as the real-world application of high-performance design and construction practices. Award winners will be invited to present their projects on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. in February of 2010, in conjunction with an educational briefing for the High-Performance Buildings Congressional Caucus. In 2010, the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education will award several grants ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. Grant applications are now available and can be found at the Application Forms page of The Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education Inc. web site. Grants will be announced at Lightfair International on May 12, 2010.
