Prof. Laura Joines Wins Two Awards

In a recent ceremony, US Green Building Council (USGBC) awarded Laura Joines, AIA, of DOMU Architects, and Besant Hill School, Ojai, CA, a Green Schools Sustainable Design Award for 2011.

As well, Prof. Joines received a stipend and Artist-in-Residency Award to work in the ceramic studio of the late Beatrice Wood at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts, Ojai, CA. The December 2011 award provided a three-day residency, including all meals and lodging in order to allow maximum time to be spent in the pottery studio. You are invited to view a picture of the resulting work by Prof. Joines.

State Faculty Support Grants

The State Faculty Support Grant program supports research, scholarship, and creative activities that help faculty remain current in their disciplines and contribute new knowledge, with the intent of strengthening California socially, culturally, and economically. Cal Poly Diversity Colloquium

Faculty are asked to encourage their students to fill the PAC for what should be a significant educational and enlightening experience. Celebrating Diversity is a Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo community colloquium addressing the virtues of living and learning in a diverse society. Winter 2012 Hearst Lectures

Perry Kulper, Architect, Artist, and Associate Professor of Architecture at the Taubmann College of Architecture and Urban Planning, University of Michigan, (Cal Poly BS Arch)

Perry Kulper is an architect and associate professor of architecture at the University of Michigan. Prior to his arrival at the University of Michigan he was a SCI-Arc faculty member for 16 years as well as in visiting positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Arizona State University. Subsequent to his studies at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo (BS Arch) and Columbia University (M Arch) he worked in the offices of Eisenman/ Robertson, Robert A.M. Stern and Venturi, Rauch and Scott Brown before moving to Los Angeles. His interests include the roles of representation and methodologies in the production of architecture and in broadening the conceptual range by which architecture contributes to our cultural imagination.

The Department will host an exhibition of Kulper's artwork in the CAED lobby, as well co-host a drawing workshop, "the Breakfast Club" on Saturday, January 28, 2012. Students are encourage to attend the workshop. Go to the the Breakfast Club flyer for more information.

26th Annual CSU Student Research Competition

Cal Poly Deadline: February 9, 2012

Please remind your students that the 26th Annual CSU Student Research Competition will be held at California State University, Long Beach, on Friday and Saturday, May 4 and 5, 2012. Faculty advisors should encourage senior project students and graduate students to submit entries. Recent graduates (Spring 2011 and after) are also eligible. RMCAD Call for Papers & Presentations

Rocky Mountain College of Art + Design is seeking proposals for an Assessment in the Arts conference to be held July 20-22, 2012 in Denver, Colorado. This conference seeks to add to the body of knowledge of assessment; specifically how creative academic programs can be appropriately assessed for accreditation, instructor feedback and the improvement of student learning. PLAT 3.0 Call for Submissions

Panetta Institute Congressional Internship Program NEW

Applications Requested by February 24

The Leon & Sylvia Panetta institute for Public Policy has invited Cal Poly to nominate two (2) students for participation in the fall term Congressional Intership Program. Please make your students aware of this opportunity and provide them with the Position Description (.pdf) to applicants.

The annual Congressional Internship Program is one of several Institute-sponsored programs designed to encourage and develop future leaders of this nation. This internship program provides students with an intensive two-week orientation at the Panetta institute before these interns begin work with members of California's congressional delegation in Washington, D.C. for approximately eleven weeks. Selection is based on exemplary scholastic record, interest in politics and potential for a public service career. Unique USAID Funding Opportunity UPDATED

Applications Due April 3, 2012

Interested colleges and universities are invited to join a webinar to learn more about a draft request for applications (RFA) from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) that would support individual institutions or consortia of institutions in creating innovative solutions to ongoing dev elopement challenges.

Successful applicants will bring creative, multi-disciplinary approaches to USAID's development practice while engaging faculty, staff and student communities, and will become part of a networked set of centers that bring creative problem-solving, analysis and engagement to USAID's core development practice. These centers will articulate development problems and identify, create and/or evaluate novel solutions.

Single institution centers will involve a single higher education institution. USAID anticipates awarding a total of $100 million over five years.
