Proposals due in PDCI office (186-A300) by May 7, 2012 at 12:00pm
Funding is available to faculty through the Planning, Design and Construction Institute (PDCI) Seed Grant Research Program. The funds awarded are to assist CAED faculty in their research efforts in two areas: 1) research linked to the PDCI mission and 2) research that can lead to expanded external funding (paid by non-state sources, such as industry funds, research grants, or other non-CSU sources).

Public Affairs is looking for 2012 Great Grads to feature in Cal Poly Update, on our web site, and to publicize to media. As a reminder, they are looking for interesting grads and high GPAs are NOT required!

Students that have overcome hardship - financial, emotional, physical
Our youngest graduating students
Students going overseas after graduation
Students that accomplished something AMAZING while at Cal Poly - projects, inventions, community service, etc.
If you have a student in mind, please email your submissions to Stacia Momburg, with a copy to Amy Hewes, no later than May 16th for possible inclusion. Prior to contacting Public Affairs, please let your nominated student know that they will be prominently featured and may be interviewed by the media. They will also need contact information (phone and email) so that we can interview and photograph the grads.

As you most likely know, Blackboard will be retired at the end of the Winter 2012 term. Cal Poly has adopted Moodle as its centrally supported learning management system beginning in Spring 2012. ITS will support both Moodle and Blackboard during the transition period, with the expectation that Blackboard will no longer be available as of May 31, 2012. Course content will not be migrated automatically for faculty from Blackboard to Moodle. To assist you in this process go to the Transferring Files from Blackboard to PolyLearn web page. 2012 ONE Prize Competition: BLIGHT TO MIGHT NEW

ONE Prize 2012 is a call to put design in the service of disenfranchised communities, to reinvigorate deindustrialized and depressed urban areas, and to repurpose spaces for economic growth and job creation. The competition is powered by the idea that social, ecological, and economic struggles can simultaneously be addressed through collaborative action and innovative planning. Wow! Science Camp, a nonprofit summer science camp dedicated to promoting children's interest in science, is looking to create a center that highlights aspects of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) in a manner that will facilitate hand-on activities by children. The idea is to give kids an opportunity to understand how STEM makes a difference in the real world. They would appreciate an opportunity to have a conversation with anyone who is interested in this project. If possible, they could make the project competitive and the winning design or team can receive a cash award of up to $2,500. Communities large and small around the globe face increasingly complex challenges to quality of life that require innovative solutions. The AIA has launched a long-term commitment that it will develop with other partners within the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) to help address such problems. Decade of Design: The AIA Urban and Regional Solutions Challenge is conceived as a 10-year commitment to engage architecture schools and other stakeholders in research in a set of targeted areas to address problems facing, urban, suburban, and rural communities in the United States and beyond.
To launch the Decade of Design the AIA is partnering with ACSA and the CGI to solicit proposals for research projects in the first of a series of topic areas: design and health. The proposed projects should document the positive impact of design interventions or propose solutions, based on past successes, that can be readily implemented in the future. Through the projects, faculty, students, and practitioners will actively engage stakeholders to ensure that proposed design solutions are a good fit for the communities in which they will occur.

Following up on the success of 22 past workshops since 1988, the 2012 University Professors' Masonry Workshop will provide professors with resources and background needed to effectively teach masonry design and construction classes at the university level. One hundred years have passed since Le Corbusier’s Voyage to the Orient. Although he didn’t venture into the Far East, his influence – and that of Modernism – is recognizable across the world. This conference looks at Modernism’s significance to architecture and urbanism from across the world. It will explore its lasting, or fading, influence on China; and China’s influence on it.
Architecture, and indeed the world, has changed massively over the last century, so this conference will explore what contemporary ideas can be drawn from different historical periods and different social circumstances.
The conference will be part of the UK Now" festival, which is one of the biggest cultural exchange evens organized by the UK government in China.
