- NEW - Dr. Tom Neuhaus of the Food Science and Nutrition Department has a NGO, Project Hope and Fairness, that works with helping African cocoa farmers. He visits West Africa every summer (I accompanied him this year) and one of the cocoa farming villages in Ghana gave him three acres of land as a thank you for the help he has given over the years. He wants to use the land to build a study center that would be available to undergraduate and graduate students and faculty interested in different areas of study like organic farming, solar energy, and cocoa production. He is looking for a Cal Poly architecture student to help him design it.
A brief overview of what he was brainstorming for the center:
2 classrooms
4 bedrooms (for students)
Solar power on the roof
Workshop for demonstrating new technologies
Outside...
Cocoa grove
Toolshed
Open area with cocoa driers
Ponds with tilapia
Tropical garden with outdoor seating
Any students who would be at all interested or want more information, should contact Dr. Neuhaus, at tneuhaus@calpoly.edu <mailto:tneuhaus@calpoly.edu>
