- Valley Development Council Design Competition
Early Registration - November 2, 2009
Late Registration & Submission Deadline - January 15, 2009
Architects, designers, landscape architects, planners and students are invited to prepare concept plans for the redevelopment of three strategic sites in the Pioneer Valley, a region of Western Massachusetts defined by the Connecticut River Valley. These sites are located in Southampton, Palmer and Hadley. The goal for this international design competition is to create a local example of sustainable development and redevelopment, and to provide a model of how communities in the region can grow smarter. With the partnerships formed through this competition process, there will be significant momentum for turning the winning concept plan idea into reality. - Retail Design Institute
The Retail Design Institute invites all students presently enrolled in a recognized colege level Architectural, Interior Design or Environmental Design Program to join in the 2010 Student Retail Interior Design Competition.
Deadlines: Submittal Due - April 12th , 2010
Judging - End of April , 2010
Awards Notification - May 1st , 2010
- Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial Design Competition
Deadlines: October 1, 2009 – Registration opens
January 1, 2010 – Registration ends
March 1, 2010 – First stage submission due
June 1, 2010 – Second stage presentations due
Design Challenge: To build Inspiring Memorial to the Holocaust and genocide on a magnificent site dedicated for that purpose by the city of Atlantic City. The Memorial is intended to commemorate the Holocaust in a way that is universal and enduring. It is envisioned to be a compelling visual statement at a significant public place, not a museum. - NEW - Hearst Lecture - Preston Scott Cohen: Preston Scott Cohen Inc.

Preston Scott Cohen’s work is known for its synthesis of architectural typologies, descriptive geometry, and digital media. The work of his firm, Preston Scott Cohen, Inc., encompasses projects ranging in scale from residences to educational and cultural institutions. Cohen received the first prize in the international competitions for the Robbins Elementary School in Trenton, NJ (2006), and for two Museums: the Taiyuan Art Museum in Taiyuan, China (2007-2011) and the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Amir Building (2003-2009). He is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the Academy Award in Architecture from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and three Progressive Architecture Awards. His work has been widely published and is in numerous collections. Cohen is the author of Contested Symmetries and Other Predicaments in Architecture. Cohen is the Chair of Department of Architecture at Harvard University Graduate School of Design where he is the coordinator of the first year design studios and teaches the foundation course in Projective and topological geometry, advanced studios and design thesis.

The Department is fortunate to offer to our students this fall a variety of digital workshops. While several of the sessions times are already booked with specific trainings, there are additional times available for faculty lead studio/classes.
