  1. NEW - One Prize 2011 ($10,000 Award)
    Deadline - Registration Due by, April 30, 2011
    ONE PRIZE INVITES THE WORLD MOST TALENTED AND ENTERPRISING: architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners, engineers, scientists, cleantech entrepreneurs, economists, artists, students and individuals of all backgrounds: To propose the NYC BLUE NETWORK by expanding waterborne transportation and linking the five boroughs with a series of green transit hubs incorporating ferries, water taxis, bike shares, electric car-share and electric shuttle buses as well as providing in-water recreation, water-oriented educational and cultural activities and climate resilience. To further propose for New York City a design for the WORLD LARGEST CLEAN TECH EXPO in 2014, and by doing so to create the world largest urban clean tech corridor along the water, and establish NYC as the ultimate green capital of the world.   2. Mel Ferris Scholarship Competition
    Deadline: Applications due February 14, 2010
    Each year, the California Architectural Foundation administers the Mel Ferris Scholarship Program, awarded to architectural students at California universities who have demonstrated financial need and exemplary academic and design achievements. The Foundation has awarded more than 93 grants and scholarships (ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 each) since its inception in 1991, to university-level architectural students in California.
    The Mel Ferris Scholarship program provides scholarships to qualified architecture students studying at one of the ten accredited Architecture universities in California. The scholarships are awarded based upon demonstrated financial need, as well as academic and design achievements, and are awarded without regard to race, gender, age, physical abilities or religious beliefs. The California Architectural Foundation awards the scholarships annually. It is the goal of the Foundation Board of Regents to award scholarships to offset tuition expenses.   3. NCARB Prize 10 (1st prize $25,000)
    Deadline: February 11, 2011
    The NCARB Prize supports combined practice and education projects at the university level. Submissions must represent unique efforts to integrate education and practice initiatives while allowing students to earn academic credit. The NCARB Prize was initiated in 2001 in response to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching’s report, Building Community: A New Future for Architecture Education and Practice (The Boyer Report). As envisioned by Peter Steffian, FAIA, who served as Council president 2001, the NCARB Prize program was designed to encourage, reward, and showcase diverse programs and activities that wholly integrate practice and education in an academic setting.   4. The Young Structural Engineers' International Design Competition 2011
    (First Prize £5,000 )

    Deadline: April 8, 2011
    The Young Structural Engineers International Design Competition is run every 3 years and aims to encourage ingenuity, imagination and inventiveness in young structural engineers. The competition is open to structural engineers and individuals under the age of 30 who are taking, or have successfully taken, a recognized civil and/or structural engineering course of study. The winner(s) of the competition will be awarded the John Barrett Prize and receive £5,000 and a certificate of commendation.   5. Bruce Thompson 2011 Student Light Fixture Design Competition
    Deadline: April 8, 2011
    Bruce Thompson was a twenty-five year veteran of the lighting industry. He had a broad background in the profession having worked in theatre, retail, as a factory representative, and concluding his career in manufacturing as vice president of sales and marketing. Throughout his
    career Bruce emphasized design and innovation. He was also an accomplished light fixture designer. He established this independent competition to encourage creativity and education in light fixture design and manufacturing. The competition is administered by The Robert Bruce Thompson Trust, which was formed solely for the purpose of conducting the competition.

  6. Leicester B. Holland Prize
    Deadline: May 31, 2011
    Eligibility - No particular professional credentials are required; anyone is eligible to compete in the Holland Prize competition. Only present employees of the Heritage Documentation Programs (HDP) are ineligible. The prize entry may be undertaken by students in conjunction with required courses, electives, independent study and summer institutes. There is no entry fee.
    Drawing Regulations - The documentation is to consist of a single, well-composed sheet of drawings that best conveys the significance of the building, site, structure, or landscape. The measured drawing must conform to the HABS, HAER (including the Guidelines for Recording Historic Ships), or HALS Guidelines and Standards, and to the Holland Prize Rules and Recommendations. Guidelines can be downloaded via the HDP web site. Participants are encouraged to consult the Built in America web site at the Library of Congress, or the HDP web site, for examples of measured drawings that meet the standards.
    Entry Instructions - The individual or faculty sponsor must submit the Holland Prize Entry Form (PDF) by the required deadline. The entry form must be received at least two weeks prior to the receipt of the completed drawings. Upon receipt of the entry form, individuals or project teams will be provided with the requested number of blank sheets of mylar for hand-drawn projects, or the AutoCAD title block for CAD projects. There is no charge for these materials.

  7. 8th Annual Next Generation Call for Entries

    "Get Zero" challenges you to draw upon your considerable talents, think big, and help solve an enormous problem. Metropolis is partnering with the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) in our 2011 Next Generation Design Competition to bring one of their buildings to Zero Environmental Impact. Whether you are an architect, interior designer, product designer, landscape designer, graphic designer, communication designer, or engineer--or a collaborative group that brings together all these talents--you can make a world-changing difference for one of the planet's biggest landlords! One building can become an example for the GSA's 9,600 other properties. We're asking you to show them how. While the $10,000 prize goes only to the winning entry, the jury will select a group of top entries with ground-breaking design ideas they'd like to recommend to the GSA.   8. Peterson Prize 2011 (First Prize $3,000)

    2011 Peterson Prize Poster The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) of the National Park Service, The Athenaeum of Philadelphia and The American Institute of Architects (AIA) announce the 2011 Charles E. Peterson Prize, which annually recognizes the best set of measured drawings prepared to HABS standards and donated to HABS by students. The prize honors Charles E. Peterson, FAIA, founder of the HABS program, and is intended to increase awareness, knowledge, and appreciation of historic buildings throughout the United States while adding to the permanent HABS collection of measured drawings at the Library of Congress. To date, more than 2,000 students from 68 colleges and universities have participated by completing more than 500 entries and almost 5,000 sheets of measured drawings. The students have worked alone and in groups, in required courses, electives, independent study and summer institutes. They have been, for the most part, architecture students in addition to architectural history, interior design, and American studies majors.   9. Leicester B. Holland Prize

    The Leicester B. Holland Prize is an annual competition that recognizes the best single-sheet measured drawing of an historic building, site, or structure prepared by an individual(s) to the standards of the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), Historic American Engineering Record (HAER), or the Historic American Landscapes Survey (HALS). The prize is supported by the Paul Rudolph Trust, Architectural Record, a magazine of the American Institute of Architects (AIA); and the Center for Architecture, Design & Engineering in the Library of Congress, and administered by the Heritage Documentation Programs of the National Park Service (HABS/HAER/HALS/CRGIS). The prize honors Leicester B. Holland (1882-1952), FAIA, chairman of the AIA’s Committee on Historic Buildings, head of the Fine Arts Division of the Library of Congress and first curator of the HABS collection, a co-founder of the HABS program in the 1930s, and the first chair of the HABS Advisory Board.     Recognition of forward-looking projects
    The Holcim Awards is an international competition that recognizes innovative projects and future-oriented concepts on regional and global levels. A total of USD 2 million dollars in prize money is awarded in each three-year cycle. The competition seeks projects that demonstrate an ability to stretch conventional notions about sustainable building and also balance environmental, social and economic performance – while also exemplifying architectural excellence and a high degree of transferability.   11. Retail Design Institute Design Competition

    On behalf of the Student Design Competition Committee , we are pleased to announce the 2011 International Student Store Design Competition.
    With the help of our Platinum Supporter, Stylemark and Mega Wall, we will be awarding a total of $10,000.00 USD to the winners. We hope the chosen category, �Department Store Outlet� Retailer, will be of interest to you. The struggles of department store retailers during the recession is a hot topic in the retail design industry, as many operators currently looking for areas of expansion are using value based channels to open new locations. Several Department stores have been redesigning, rebranding and rolling out new outlet prototypes. Our goal is to award creative thinking, to help your professors teach you a real-world holistic design process, and to introduce students to the exciting and dynamic career of retail design.   12. 25th Annual CSU Student Research Competition

    The California State University Student Research Competition, initiated in 1985, features research achievements of undergraduate students, graduate students, and recent alumni from all academic disciplines. Approximately 200 students from the 22 CSU campuses submit written papers and make oral presentations before juries of professional experts from major corporations, foundations, public agencies, and universities in California.   1. TCAA 2011 Scholarship (Tile Contractors' Association of America)
    Deadline: April 1, 2011
    The Tile Contractors’ Association of America (TCAA) is a national trade association representing tile and stone installation companies throughout the United States who are members of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftsmen. In 2001, TCAA established a merit scholarship program to award funds to students of architecture. In 2005, TCAA set up a trust fund with the Truman Heartland Community Foundation and the association currently funds two $2,000 scholarships each year for qualifying students.   2. The Lighting Quotient
    Deadline: Submissions due March 15, 2011
    In honor of its founder Sylvan R. Shemitz, one of the innovative forces behind asymmetric lighting, The Lighting Quotient has established a student scholarship in partnership with the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES). Designed for the future generation of lighting designers, engineers and architects, all second, third, fourth and fifth year undergraduate or graduate students in accredited design degree programs are eligible to apply. A scholarship in the amount of $2,500 will be awarded annually to one student who demonstrates creativity, vision and knowledge in the field of architectural lighting. To apply for the Sylvan R. Shemitz Scholarship, students must read the project description in the attached link and follow the project requirements, including a lighting plan, lighting fixture schedule and specifications and a 250-word written statement of the objectives and goals of the lighting design concept.   4. Last Chance - Tradewell Fellowship

    Named in honor of the late Gary Tradewell, a former Vice President and Medical Planner of WHR, the Tradewell Fellowship was created to build careers of aspiring healthcare architects. Each year, the Tradewell Fellow is involved with clients in early master planning and design with a particular focus on healing environments and collaborative design methods. The Fellowship begins and ends in July and includes employment at WHR Architects in Houston. In addition to working directly with senior medical planners and clients, Fellows receive career guidance from leaders at WHR and a network of past Tradewell Fellows. At the completion of the year-long Fellowship, participants have begun to develop the skills and experiences to become leaders and mentors.   5. Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation Education
    Deadline: Friday, February 4, 2011
    The Alliance for Historic Landscape Preservation Education Committee announces that three student scholarships are available to attend and to present research at the 2011 Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas, April 6–9, 2011. The total value of the scholarship is $470, including a waiver of the conference registration fee ($170) and, an award of $300 to offset travel expenses. Upper level undergraduate and graduate students in all disciplines related to cultural landscape preservation may apply for a scholarship. In order to apply, send the following materials to Education Committee members listed below in both hard copy (via snail mail) and digital formats (via email).
    • A letter addressed to the Committee clearly stating your interests in attending the 2011 Annual Conference in Fort Worth, Texas;

  6. Erasmus Mundus - MaMaSELF Scholarships
    MaMaSELF is a two year European Master program in Materials Science, which aims to teach the application of “Large Scale Facilities” for the characterization and development of materials. Modern life and globalization imply new and additional exigencies for scientists and scientific engineers in the field of scientific and industrial competitiveness. This holds specifically for the development of new technologies and new materials which are important key-products and which contribute to the technological and scientific competitiveness of highly industrialized countries. The characterization of these materials and also the optimizing of technologies strongly demand sophisticated methods, some of them uniquely available at “Large Scale Facilities” using neutrons or synchrotron radiation.   3. Environmental Psychology, Universal Design and the ADA
    February 15th-February 17th - 6-8:30pm
    "We have only two choices in dealing with our surroundings; we can accommodate our behaviors to respond to the environment or we can accommodate the environment to respond to our behaviors. The choice is ours!" Prof. Emeritus Paul Wolff of the Architecture Department will lead a three night workshop on UNIVERSAL DESIGN and HUMAN BEHAVIOR.
