The Japan program is an extended fieldtrip. Professor Don Choi will take 16-18 students to Japan for spring quarter 2009. Students will spend the first four weeks in Kyoto studying historical sites such as Katsura Detached Palace and contemporary architects such as Tadao Ando. After a one-week guided fieldtrip to western Japan, students will spend four weeks in Tokyo examining modern architecture and urbanism. An additional week traveling in northern Japan will include sites such as Toyo Ito's Sendai Mediatheque. Students will take Arch 453 (architectural design), Arch 420 (seminar in history, theory, and criticism) and Arch 480 (special studies in architecture) for a total of 15 units. Four weeks of language instruction are included.
Faculty Coordinator: Don Choi
Students participating in the Japan program pay standard Cal Poly tuition plus program fees specific to the Japan program. These program fees include airfare, housing, admissions to museums and other sites, insurance, and lodging/transportation for two weeks of guided travel within Japan. The exact amount of money you spend in Japan depends on your own preferences; these days Japan is not quite as expensive as many western European nations but it offers many temptations in terms of food, shopping, and travel. Please keep this in mind when calculating your own projected expenses for food and personal expenses.
