Approved: 5-15-09
The Architecture Faculty has approved these guidelines to help ensure the safety, security, and integrity of our facilities. They are intended to foster a culture of respect for our rooms and buildings, which is especially important now that our labs are being refurbished. We invite you to become an informed steward of your environment and to respect the property and facilities made available to you during your time at Cal Poly.
The Basics
- Everyone is responsible for safety of his/her classmates and possessions. Please do not work alone or let a fellow student work alone late at night in any lab. Please lock all the lab doors if you are the last person to leave the room; this includes the sliding doors in the Architecture Building.
- Do not bring alcohol into the labs. According to campus policy, students of any age are not allowed to consume, possess or dispense alcohol on campus except by permission of the Cal Poly Corporation.
- Do not smoke in or near the labs. According to campus policy, smoking is prohibited in all campus buildings. It shall be permitted in designated areas only, and it shall not be permitted while walking outside of a designated area.
- For the sake of security and energy conservation, please turn off lights and close doors and windows if you are the last person to leave the room.
- Please report any theft of or damage immediately to the University Police at (805) 756-2281. This applies to University property and your own personal belongings.
Furniture and Equipment
- Please do not bring old furniture and equipment into the labs; this includes sofas, stuffed chairs, or bedding. They will be removed at the end of each quarter unless tagged by your instructor.
- You may use a single small, dorm-size refrigerator or microwave oven in each lab. You may also use a coffeemaker if you keep it away from paper or any other combustible material.
- You should keep all appliances clean or they will be removed at the end of each quarter.
- For the sake of fire safety, do not use any type of electric resistance or flame-heating device in the labs, such as a space heater, hot plate, toaster oven, propane stove, or matches. Please notify your instructor if there is a problem with the temperature in your room. System policy does not permit the use of personal electric heaters or fans in CSU facilities, with the following exceptions: (1) if required for medical reasons; (2) if the building HVAC system fails; (3) if the building HVAC system is not capable of maintaining space temperatures between 68 and 78 degrees.
- Please use only grounded extension cords with built-in circuit breakers.
- According to campus policy, bicycles are not to be ridden or parked inside buildings or stairways. Furthermore, bicycles shall not be parked where they impede pedestrian traffic or create a hazard, i.e., parked on lawn areas and sidewalks or secured to lampposts, landscaping, stairs, railings, etc. Bicycles should be parked in bike racks.
- Please do not move furniture or equipment from room to room. One room’s gain will be a loss to another room and another set of students. Students will also be charged for missing items from studios.
- Please do not take indoor furniture or equipment outdoors.
- Please notify your instructor of any missing or broken furniture or equipment so that he/she can notify the Department.
- You are responsible for the furniture and equipment in your lab. If any item is missing or damaged during the quarter, a fee will be divided and charged to the entire class (unless one or more students claim responsibility) to replace or repair the item(s) as follows:
1. 16-Outlet Power Strip .......................... up to $150
2. A-la-carte Studio Chair ....................... up to $225
3. 60” x 36” Maple Top Main Desk ........ up to $450
4. 72” x 36” Maple Top Side Desk ........ up to $450

8. Projector Screen....................................up to $1,500
- In addition, you are personally responsible for your studio lab key. Any late or lost key can result in a charge of up to $250 (per key) to your student account. Students who turn in keys late consecutive quarters will have late fees doubled.
- Please contact the Architecture Department office should you have any questions or concerns.
Working In Labs
- Do keep a minimum 3’ path of travel between all tables at all times. The labs must be kept safe, which means that exit routes and paths of travel must remain clear and unencumbered. This is particularly important in the event of a fire or earthquake.
- Do use power tools in the Support Shop. This will enable you to receive immediate and appropriate assistance in the event of an accident.
- Do not use power tools in the labs or adjacent spaces unless designated for such use by the Department or College of Architecture; these spaces include the yard and terraces behind the Architecture Building. The courtyard is an extension of the MRC, and the terraces were not designed for such use, which may damage the roof membrane and lead to drainage problems in the rooms below.
- Do not spray-paint in the labs. Spray-paint only outdoors in the paint booths. Please try not to overspray or allow spray fumes to enter the rooms, and please clean up after yourself whenever you work away from your desk.
- Do not use any other toxic materials like resins in or near the labs. The Support Shop has an outdoor area where this kind of work should take place.
- Do not use the sinks to dispose of food or any material that you would hesitate to put down your own sink at home. This definitely includes glue, paint, thinner, cement, and plaster. The Support Shop may provide a means of disposing such material; otherwise it should go in the trash.
- The 2007-08 CBF has provided each studio with a first-aid kit. Please inform the Department if it is missing or needs supplies.
- Please protect the table tops by using cutting mats or other protective material when making models; other students will have to work at this table after you are done. Do not cut on, write on, glue on, paint on, or otherwise mar furniture, equipment, floors, or walls.
- Please pick up trash as it accumulates in the labs and adjacent areas. You may want to help organize a weekly cleanup so that waste and clutter is kept to a minimum. The Department will endeavor to keep the labs stocked with a broom and dustpan so you can do so.
Building Modification
- Do not attach anything to the exterior of any building without permission of the Dean’s Office.
- Do not suspend anything from the beams, ceiling, ceiling tiles, or light fixtures of any room.
- Do not attach anything in a way that mars floors or walls of any room by using glue, nails, or screws.
- According to campus policy, interior signs shall be posted on approved bulletin boards only. Posting of signs on building walls, doors, windows, etc., is also prohibited. Placement of temporary exterior signs is subject to review by Facility Services.
- If approved by the Department, limited posting of signs is permitted in the gallery and stair court of the Architecture Building. Those posting signs are responsible for removing them.
- To protect the roof membrane of the Architecture Building, do not use furniture and do not extinguish cigarettes on the third- and fourth-floor terraces. Do not use the terraces as BBQ or smoking areas.
- Campus policy forbids graffiti.
Finals Week
- Please turn off computers, monitors, and printers.
- Please empty, clean, and unplug refrigerators, microwave ovens, and coffeemakers. Leave refrigerator doors open.
- Please remove anything that is taped or tacked to the wall or ceiling.
- Please sort all model-making material and place it in appropriate bins for recycling. Your efforts have saved much wood, metal and miscellaneous materials from going to the landfill.
- Please sort trash and place it in appropriate bins for recycling. Anything that cannot be recycled should be put in the trashcans or dumpsters.
- Please remove all personal possessions and projects. The janitors will remove anything that is not tagged by you or your instructors.
- In general, please leave the labs as clean as you found them. (A cleaning fee of up to $200/student will be charged to students who do not clean their lab at then end of each quarter)
- Please report all necessary repairs to your instructor.
- Please return all lab keys to the Key Shop (Bldg. 58).
