Vellum Design Build and the College of Architecture and Environmental Design are pleased to announce the 5th Annual Vellum/CAED Furniture Exhibition. The exhibition of furniture designed and constructed by CAED students will be on display the 7th + 8th of November, 2008 at the Old Central Coast Surfboard Space 736 Higuera Street in downtown San Luis Obispo. The top entries will also travel to Santa Barbara to be showcased in the Design Within Reach showroom there on State Street, the 11th of December.

Jury Members

We are delighted to again draw the following top names in the design industry for the jury.

Joshua Aidlin of Aidlin Darling Design in San Francisco. Joshua, who will also lecture as part of the Hearst Lecture Series this Fall, directs projects in architecture, interiors, furniture and architectural products. Aidlin Darling Design allows for the cross-fertilization of design and fabrication, housing shop and design studio in the same space. Hilary Nagler of Design Within Reach. Hilary is a studio proprietor of the ubiquitous furniture showroom Design Within Reach. With over 65 showrooms in 25 states, DWR brings the best in Modern Furniture Design to the United States and beyond. For more, please see their web site: www.dwr.com.

Jonathan Reich of the Cal Poly Architecture Department where he teaches architectural design studio and interdisciplinary courses in "sustainable design." Architect and Professor Jonathan Reich is licensed in the States of Washington and California. Many of his built projects blend building and landscape with furniture-like elements at various scales. He has completed design/build projects with students including sculptural bus shelters for the Moscow Idaho school district and the Wurster Hall parachute canopy project. He has previously served as a juror for the multi-state furniture competition the "Chair Affair."

This year we also have two local architects on the jury.

Mark Rawson, AIA is a Cal Poly alumnus who has helped shape the ambiance of downtown San Luis Obispo, working on projects such as the Downtown Center, The Court Street Project and Chinatown, all for developers Copelands Properties. He received an AIA award for the Court Street Project in 2006.

Tricia Hamachai rounds out the cast of local and California designers on the jury. Tricia has spent the majority of the last five years working on adaptive re-use projects in downtown Los Angeles for Santa Monica-based Killefer Flammang Architects. She has also worked on multi-family housing and hospitality projects, along with a homeless services facility on skid row. Tricia also remodeled and opened Thai Talay, a successful Thai restaurant in Pismo Beach, California. The restaurant is in its fifth year of business.

Featured Artist: Christina Mcphee

Christina McPhee creates topologic site studies in photography, drawing and electronic media suites. For VELLUM, she'll be showing clips from video installation work in progress, "Ballona We are Here" and "Seven After Eleven." New group exhibitions in 2008-9 include "War as a Way of Life" at the 18th Street Art Center, Santa Monica; Bucharest Biennial 3: "Being There: Mapping the Contemporary" in Bucharest and "The Map: Navigating the Present," Bildmuseet, Umea (Sweden), "Bad Moon Rising" at Boots Contemporary, Saint Louis; Videoformes, Clermont-Ferrand, France; and a solo exhibition at Silverman Gallery, San Francisco (September 2009). New publications include an interview/essay, "Slipstreaming the Cyborg" in Critical Digital Studies: A Reader, University of Toronto Press, October 2008.
