Cal Poly architecture student Sarah Jester was recognized for excellence in digital design recently at the Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture conference in Chicago. Jester’s recognized project, "Inhabitable Book Library for San Francisco," was undertaken in third-year design studio with Cal Poly Architecture Professor Thomas Fowler.
AutoDesSys, the company that developed the award-winning Form Z digital modeling software, organized the 17th annual awards banquet. Nominated projects are presented to a distinguished jury comprising five individuals outside of AutoDesSys, all experts or theorists of computer aided design. Jurors are charged with selecting the award winners in a setting that does not disclose names of the nominees or school affiliations in the following categories: Architectural Design, Interior Design, Fabrication, Visualization/Illustration and Animation.

Following the Hearst Lecture by Ralph Roesling on Friday, 23 October, Mr. Roesling will be offering a Saturday, 24 October workshop exploring the use of Revit software as a design tool.

In this exercise, by way of a fine 4 course meal as a starting point, as inspiration, as insight into human nature, your exercise will be to make a temporary shelter for enjoying a fine dining experience, experiencing the beauty of a west coast sunset and finally a portable structure that defines space. You must come to an intuitive understanding of "the nature of" the exact site that you have selected, and compose your own tectonic design – demonstrative of a process of the act of putting together or joining a series of elements that allow you to experience a quality meal with people you enjoy -- which reflects the quality of the food being eaten.
The Workshop will follow a three step process:
This workshop can be taken for I unit of professional elective credit.

While several of the sessions times are already booked with specific trainings, there are additional times available for faculty lead studio/classes. 2009 graduates Zhong Ren Huang and Yang Wang (Prof. Stephen Phillips thesis studio) each received an AIA CCC Student Design Award at the 2009 Design Awards Gala Banquet. Wang (above left) received a Honor award for the Spider Tower, and Huang (above right) received a Merit Award for his project L.A. Landscraper.
Carisa Nakano (4th year student) received the AIA CCC scholarship. Kevin Bussett, Jason Pignolet and Tracy N. Wang were runners up to the Award as part ot the 5th year student thesis projects for consideration.
This year's Design Awards' Committee added a new category to include thesis student work completed during the past academic year. Jurors included Joe N. Shimoda (B.Arch 88), Prof. Robert Arens, and Eric Meyer (Cal Poly Graphic Design 85).
Prof. Stephen Phillips (principal fo SPARCHS) received a Merit award for the project Seadrift Residence Remodal. Prof. Tom di Santo (B.Arch 89) -principal of M:OME with Prof. Laura Joines-Novotny) received a Merit award for the Bikini Residence + SI:Guesthouse. George Garcia (B.Arch 89) -principal of Garcia Archtiecture + Design, received an Honour award for Project 401.
