"RNT: Modern Master Award"
"Runner's up"
Once again, we have an auspicious team of jurors headed by:
Ron Radziner of Marmol Radziner in Santa Monica. Ron Radziner, FAIA is the principal in charge of design at Marmol Radziner and Associates. Radziner, a Cal Poly alumnus runs the office with fellow alum, Leo Marmol. Marmol Radziner is a unique office in that they celebrate the “joy of making” through a variety of avenues, whether it be architecture, construction or landscape, furniture or prefab housing.
Additionally, we have James Gates and James Brown of PUBLIC in San Diego. Public, an office of architecture and art in San Diego, is headed by Cal Poly Alumni, James Gates and James Brown. Their particular brand of phenomenological design results in a specifically “hands-on” approach to architectural practice. In striving to create an architecture of the senses, it becomes necessary to confront and engage multiple boundaries within the study and practice of architecture. Of critical importance is the process of 'making'. With Public’s own hands, they put physical shape to their model and paper designs. Without the hand of the designer shaping the piece, the practice of architecture becomes mere direction, with the architect only suggesting a vague possibility, not 'making' a conceptual and physical connection.
Rounding out the jury is Chris Allen of CWA: construction, woodworking and architecture. Chris has participated in three Vellum Design Commpetitions, winning two with partner Bonnie Miller. He spends most of his time building amazingly well-crafted artifacts, furniture and casework.
We also have local furniture designer, Laura Rittenhouse and local architect Brian Starr of SDG architects in San Luis Obispo.
Design Within Reach– San Francisco-based Design Within Reach (DWR), is a retailer of well-designed furnishings and accessories with close to 75 outlets in Canada and the US will be sponsoring a reception for the 2009 Vellum winners.
