The Back-of-the-Envelope Bush Library Design Contest

SPONSORS:
The Chronicle of Higher Education
TYPE:
Open, national, RfP
LOCATION:

LANGUAGE:
English
TIMETABLE:
01 Feb 2008 - Submission Deadline
ELIGIBILITY:
“professional architects and designers, or merely people who read too many
design magazines”
JURY:
Not Announced
AWARDS:
We want designs that are serious, humorous, adventurous, or all of the
above. You could win a sleek iPod Touch.
FEE:
None
THE COMPETITION:
George W. Bush might not have been much of a book reader when he was at Yale
University, but like any modern president, he will have a presidential
library -- likely at Southern Methodist University.
Robert A.M. Stern, celebrity architect and dean of the Yale School of
Architecture, has been picked to design it. But we are certain that
Chronicle readers have their own ideas of what the George W. Bush
Presidential Library should look like.
We're asking for your back-of-the-envelope designs, as if you'd sat down
next to the president and sketched out your idea on a scrap piece of White
House stationery.
Here’s how this will work:
1. Chronicle readers -- be they professional architects and designers, or
merely people who read too many design magazines -- will sketch out their
versions of the George W. Bush Presidential Library. These are
back-of-the-envelope designs, and therefore should be on the back of a
size-10 envelope. You can write explanatory descriptions of various aspects
of your library design -- just be sure to write clearly.
2. Write your name, address, phone number, and e-mail address on the
other side of the envelope.
3. Put that envelope into another envelope and send it to The Chronicle
at the address below by February 1, 2008.
4. We'll scan the designs and post them online for all to see. (We
reserve the right to winnow the pool of contestants.)
5. Readers will vote on their favorite design.
6. The winning designer will win a brand new iPod Touch. It's not a
commission to design a presidential library, but it could be a close second.

THE COMPETITION:
Competition coupled with an exhibition aimed at fostering creative, new
ideas for the reinvigoration/reuse of the small-scale strip shopping plazas.
In oversupply yet vastly underused, strip plazas from a generation ago
define the streetscapes of many towns. Many are dilapidated eyesores. Yet
many are home to small restaurants, sole proprietorships and mom-and-pop
businesses that can be wonderfully unique, entrepreneurial concerns, highly
responsive to community needs. Strip malls breed strange and wonderful
bedfellows (a yoga studio next to pet grooming next to a mattress store, for
example), yet are plagued by interspersed vacant storefronts and generic
design. With ample parking and adjacent to thriving neighborhoods, these
strip malls have great potential for adaptive re-use and architectural
upgrades. They are an undervalued and neglected building stock. This
competition will look at options for making strip malls economically viable,
aesthetic interesting and communally meaningful.
Participants can select one model site from among three sites that have been
submitted by city planners from the municipalities of Scottsdale, Tempe and
Phoenix, Arizona. Detailed information will soon be posted on the web site.
The goal of the competition is to generate ideas that better the quality of
civic life.
