China field trip 2010: Shanghai, Beijing, Xian, Hong Kong and Suzhou

To architecturally explore three major international mega-cities, one ancient city and one ancient Chinese Classical Garden town in China. Five cities are filled with new major buildings and transformed by a new sensibility about modernity.

  1. In Shanghai, for the World Expo 2010, the most ecological and imaginative pavilions are being built in this Western influenced and Chinese impacted culture and design from the Colonial Era until the present time.
  2. In Beijing, for the 2008 World Olympics, the most daring and innovative mega structures were built right in the heart of the crowded Chinese historical capitol city.
  3. Xi’an is the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, and used to be the capital of eleven dynasties in Chinese history. It is a city rich in over 5000 years of culture and history.
  4. In Hong Kong, one can discover a diverse modern metropolis steeped in unique blends of Eastern and Western traditions.
  5. Suzhou has been called the "Venice of the Orient", as it is an ancient town interlaced by numerous canals, where all the most famous Chinese Classical Gardens are located.

The field trip to Shanghai, Beijing, Xian, Hong Kong and Suzhou will study the impact of contemporary global forces on the traditional urban fabrics and discover what hybrid ideas resulted from this collision.
