Christopher Yip was trained in architecture and architectural history. He has taught architectural design, history, theory and criticism at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Colorado, Boulder, the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. He is concerned with conveying both an understanding and appreciation of the aesthetic and sensual qualities of the places that people have brought into existence, and making comprehensible the ways in which historical events, daily life, and cultural outlooks direct place making. Related to this is how diversity has enriched the human experience. In recent years he has participated in international programs taking architecture students on study programs in Japan and Thailand. His research interests include the history of American architecture (particularly Asian American architecture and settlement), and Asian architecture.
