Kent Macdonald has taught in several areas of Cal Poly's architecture program since 1994. His primary responsibilities currently are in the fifth-year thesis studio and seminar, where the focus is on community design, housing, and smart-growth issues. He also teaches upper-division practice.
Mr. Macdonald brings with him an extensive background in the profession, having worked on his own and with firms in San Francisco, New York, and Washington DC for nearly 20 years. The bulk of this work has been in multi-family housing (including affordable and special-needs housing) and community revitalization projects, both in the US and Asia. He has also been involved in large-scale institutional work (including hospitals, schools, and embassies), historic preservation, and adaptive reuse. A number of these projects, which include several national competition entries, have won major design awards.
Mr. Macdonald has a B.A. (1975) and an M.Arch (1983) from the University of California at Berkeley and is a licensed architect in California.
