Rise and Run: Thesis Pamphlet 2009

Rise and Run image

Compilation of Cal Poly Architecture students thesis topics conducted during the AY 2009-2009. Each student presented their thesis at the Chumash Auditorium, May 22.25, 2009.

"Architectural schools have always been a vibrant place for innovative ideas and radical change. Today, in a world where contemporary modes of thinking are challenging the idea of change itself, architectural educators are discerning the outline of another architect's mind: one similar to ours, yet profoundly different and not yet clearly defined.

This year's graduating students of the Architecture Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo express their ease in confronting this changing landscape..."

Unleashed: Thesis Pamphlet 2008

Unleashed image

Compilation of Cal Poly Architecture students thesis topics conducted during the AY 2007-2008. Each student presented their thesis at the Chumash Auditorium, May 23-25, 2008.

"It is no wonder that the title of the 2008 Chumash Show is Unleashed. Even at first glance the projects suggest self-assurance through their allegiance to a contemporary language of architectural production: brash, provocative, and exuberant in the confidence of the students to create projects that are innovative and original. A second glance confirms that the first assessment of this burst of energy and imagination was correct. Yet upon closer scrutiny..."

Compilation of Cal Poly Architecture students thesis topics conducted during the AY 2006-2007. Each student presented their thesis at the Chumash Auditorium, May 25-27, 2007.

"Small Servings, and its accompanying iconography, speaks metaphorically to a world of culinary experience: one of elegance, distinction, accompanied by a twist of both familiarity and exotic delight. The little origami vessel prominently featured in the foreground of the composition, appears to be the instructional wrapper of a set of iconic and cultural eating utensils. Chopsticks as we well know, serve to bridge Small Servings through the intervals of time and space. Case in point we are in the presence of key architectural ingredients: to serve, to structure, and to coordinate space and place..."

Image of the cover for the RNT Professional Studio publication

This book contains architecture projects by several students in Professor and architect Kent Macdonald's fifth-year thesis studios during the 2007-2008 academic year.

This particular studio was an experimental one, seeking to strenghten the students' awareness of buildign systems integration within the yearlong thesis curriculum. It did so by introducitng a stand-alone "Integrative Studio" project in fall quarter to precede the students' independent thesis work in winter and spring. (In the usual sequence, the thesis itself is three-quarter long.)

ARCH 453: RNT Professional Studio, Spring 2008 Carlsbad High School

Image of the cover for the RNT Professional Studio publication

The publication is an account of Cal Poly Architecture Department’s Fourth Year Professional Studio conducted in San Diego at the office architect and professor Ralph Roesling, principal of RNT Architects.

The New Carlsbad High School project, in the north county of San Diego with a proposed campus of 1,500 students, was under design at RNT’s San Diego office. A team of four Cal Poly students were asked to design the same project utilizing a broad based research approach understanding region, culture, climate, and project program. They took a Socratic approach probing fundamental questions about what a high school should be within this kind of regional context. The students developed a project narrative that addressed this broad based approach to immediate site specifics, regional issues, existing development patterns, and their interpretation of the School District’s criteria for an environmentally focused high school. They were encouraged to forge their own direction for this project and not be influenced by the direction of the design in the office.

The publication is part of the Architectural Environemental Design Press and can be purchased at the CarlsbadHighSchoolLulu.com web page for $18.30 (69 pages, color, paperback).

Glossary of Architectural Terms, Concepts and Expressions (2000)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"The language of architecture consists of materials, elements and products associated with building construction. Therefore by definition, architecture is a non-verbal language. Mastering this non-verbal language, learning its background, and establishing the context for its practice is a common task for learning and discipline. This is essential if one is to have a comprehensive and effective grasp of a discipline's associated activities, processes and its products."

Shrinking Cities: Volume 1 (2006)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"From Great Britain, Belgium, Finland and Italy to Russia, Kazakhstan and China, cities are shrinking--while urban-planning debates focus on the growth of the megalopolis, many of the world's existing population centers are watching their citizens walk away. Between globalization, deindustrialization, suburbanization, the transition to post-Socialism, high unemployment and, in some cases, wider national population losses, the phenomenon is growing. Shrinking Cities Volume 1: International Research, a publication of the Germany-based Shrinking Cities initiative, examines this phenomenon's causes and dynamics on an international level for the first time, exploring examples including Manchester and Liverpool, Detroit, Russia's Ivanovo, and Germany's Halle and Leipzig."

Professor and Architect Robert Aren's essay titled The Heidelberg Projectis featured in this publication and can be purchased at ShrinkingCitiesAmazon.com web page.

Stalking Detroit (2001)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"Detroit is the most thoroughly modern city in the world. Built to service the single-minded imperatives of automobile production, Detroit has come to represent the temporary nature of urbanism in the context of increasingly mobile capital. In the first half of the 20th century Detroit served as an international model for industrial urbanism arranged to maximize profits from the investment of speculative capital. In the second half of the century, the city lost much of its population in the face of increasingly global capital markets and decentralized production methods. Stalking Detroit is an anthology of essays, photographs, and projects, each offering an intellectual purchase from the urban millieu of Detroit at the end of the century, and attempting to document the residue of its material history.   Edited  by Georgia Daskalakis, Charles Waldheim, and Jason Young."

Professor and Architect Robert Aren's essay titled The Heidelberg Project is featured in this publication and can be purchased at StalkingDetroitAmazon.com web page.

Curriculum for Aerospace Architecture: With Emphasis on Lunar Base and Habitat Studies (2004)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"The curriculum for aerospace architecture is for a year-long study for fifh0year undergraduate students of architecture ore masters of architecture. It is proposed as one option for students to choose as their capstone experience. Aerospace architecture is a topic within which graduating students can develop and enhance their architectural skills. The field has highly technical aspects that will develop in students a capacity to design in a highly regulated environment. Students will practice the rigors necessary to apply codes, specifications, and technological innovations to terrestrial architecture as well as to aerospace environments. The precision required in the discipline of designing for space will strengthen the abilities of architecture students to design to the less stringent requirements of "ordinary" architecture."

Professor and architect Donna Duerk's Student's Companion can be purchased by emailing Prof. Donna Duerk.

Architectural Programming: Information Management for Design (1993)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"Although there are few other books about pre-design programming, none of them is as open, accessible, and malleable as this one. Even so, this one is rigorous and thoughtful, a true "how-to" book, useful for doing your first pre-design program and many after that. What makes it particularly useful is the approach of issue-based programming where issues are concerns that demand a design response and thus become the units for analysis in the programming process."

Professor and architect Donna Duerk's book can be purchase at ArchitecturalProgrammingAmazon.com.

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"The goal of THE UNIVERSAL TRAVELER is to provide a simplifying format for problem-solving. We believe that all problems, no matter what size they may be, can benefit form the same logical and orderly procedures now employed in the highly specialized, computer assisted statistical, disciplines which address themselves to complex world problems. In principle our everyday and occasionally more important personal problems are no different than those larger issues. The process remains constant. It is only the methods which need to be changed, and then, often in appearance alone."

Polemical Drawings (2009)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

" Polemical Drawings gives legitimacy to architect and professor John Lange’s quest in setting in place a vision for an architecture of the future; one that finds resonance in the 18th century visionary architects who believed that drawing and the act of drawing, was Architecture in its own right.

The experiences and experiments of Boullee, Ledoux, and Piranesi established Architecture as a three-dimensional manifestation of a social structure; one that was coined Architecture Parlante.

John Lange’s work is firmly anchored in this tradition and while he has devoted his life as a teacher, an academician, theoretician, and educator, this book partakes in his search for an authentic plastic expression of ideas through structure and space. The work is explicitly recorded in the form of overcalled drawings."

Professor John Lange's book is part of the Architectural Environmental Design Press and can be purchased at PolemicalDrawingsLulu.com web page for $35.90 (152 pages, full-cover, paperback)

The Executive Architect: Transforming Designers into Leaders (1996)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

The Emergence of Building Science; Historical Roots, Concepts, and Application (2007)

Image of the cover of the 2006-2007 Faculty Scholarship publication

"The design of buildings and the broader field of environmental design are often described as an art and a science. Design is an art because of both the complexity of the problem solving and decision making process involved and the innate desire of the designer to produce a solution that is unique and at the same time pleasing to our human senses. In the first instance, the complexity of the design process itself is not necessarily due to the complexity of any single issue or facts that must be considered, although some of these certainly demand in-depth subject matter knowledge, but rather the many interrelationships among those factors."

Professor and architect Jens Pohl's publication may be purchased on the The EmergenceofBuildingSciendeAmazon.com web page.
